10 Easy Ways to Update Your Winter Wardrobe
Winter is here again, and it is time to ditch the wedges for boots, the bikinis for sweaters and the sarongs for winter coats. But since your last winter wardrobe purge did you get too carried away, and perhaps throw out way to many clothes that you are now left with the costs of having to revamp your winter wardrobe? Or are you on a tight budget that does not really have room to splurge on a brand new winter collection? Here are 10 simple ideas that will help you to update your winter clothing collection without breaking the bank.
1. The Classics
Basic wardrobe staples do not actually change that much from season to season, classic items will always be there. Choose neutral colors instead of exciting prints – that red and black leopard print shirt might well be branded into your friend’s memory all season, yet that classic charcoal sweater can be worn a million times with other items and you will always look fresh.
2. Vibrant Accessories
Build your classic wardrobe by having a few exciting, colorful accessories that can be as cheap and cheerful as you want. Glittery red beads can hang low around your neck and double up as an arm or leg bracelet later. Color is fantastic to really dress up a winter wardrobe and take it from drab to dramatic; scarves, bangles, rings and all kinds of accessories are a go.
3. Vintage Wear
There is always space for a vintage piece or two. Trawl Granny’s cupboard or check out the vintage stores and buy yourself something amazing. A lace brown blouse can be worn casually during the day and still be dressed up at night. Choose beautiful vintage brooches that can be worn on lapels of overcoats, neckpieces and belts, even shoes.
4. Trendy Thrift Stores
If you are a thrift store connoisseur, you will already know out of your head where the best ones can be found. Take the time to check them all out as their stock changes almost daily, and your big bargain treasure may be snapped up if you hesitate and want to come back at lunch. Have an idea what you are looking for otherwise the treasures, the colors and the low prices could end up having you spend more than you wanted to.
5. Layers
Especially at the start of winter when you are not sure if you are going to be hot or cold, the best way to not only look funky but stay warm, is to layer your clothing. Thin, colorful sweaters layered on top of each other with a dressy blazer over your casual jeans looks great.
6. Neckwear
Neckties, shawls, scarves, and pashminas are all affordable and great for beating a winter chill when you step outside. Combine a dramatic cherry red shawl with tassels to go over your classic winter dress and long winter boots. Accessorize with a few red bangles and perhaps a high fashion seasonal fluffy red hat to keep out the chill.
7. Simple Alterations
No need to completely change an item is if works already. Sew a bright green zigzag pattern onto the hem of a long black skirt, cut the collar off of a blouse, tie die your jeans or just die a faded shirt from last season into a dark color to get you through this season.
8. Colored Leggings
These are a fantastic and inexpensive way to update your winter wardrobe. Wear them under skirts and even shorts, buy them in crazy patterns, solid and dramatic colors or go for a glitzy and sexy number.
9. Clothes Swap Party
Get your mates together, pop a bottle of wine and go through each other’s unwanted wardrobes. Swop out what you don’t want, and go home with something you have always wanted. What a brilliant excuse for a girl’s night out.
10. Your Signature Item
Being a fashion slave means that you lose who you are and even though it is always nice to be in fashion, don’t’ follow the trends blindly. Your favorite chandelier earrings, your bright orange shawl or your Grandmother’s pearls may be your signature item, make sure you stay true to yourself. Simply learn how to wear your signature item in multiple ways.
