3 Simple DIY Outdoor Design Ideas for Your Backyard

We know how easy it can be for your backyard to look overgrown and messy. Sometimes it seems like you can blink and suddenly the lawn will be overgrown, the plants will look dishevelled and the toys will be strewn everywhere.

Luckily, it’s also a very easy problem to fix. That’s partly because there are so many simple DIY backyard ideas that will change your backyard for the better (full instructions for any of these DIY ideas can be found by clicking the link).

All you have to do is set aside a day, grab some friends and/or a cold beverage and try a couple of the ideas here:

Hammock

With summer on the horizon, it’s always nice to kick back leisurely in a sun-filled hammock, which makes this a great DIY project.

Of course, before you go buying all sorts of rope, make sure your backyard has two ends that you can tie the rope to! If so, then you’re in luck.

Making a hammock is fairly easy. Start by creating 24 strands of rope that are 20 feet long. Tie all of them together into a massive knot, leaving a foot of rope at the top. Then grab the first two bits of rope and tie easy knots in pairs. Continue in this vein in rows.

It can be a bit fiddly to get right but with a bit of trial-and-error you’ll be sure to create a great hammock. One great thing about most DIY hammocks is that they’re portable, meaning you can simply attach and detach them for, say, your next camping adventure.

Movie Theatre

Why pay to see a bad film in a noisy theatre when you can create an outdoor cinema in your own backyard? Really, all you need is a big screen or a clear wall or fabric for a projector and enough space for a few outdoor chairs…or even a hammock (see above).

The trick with this project isn’t about sawing bits of wood or hammering nails into a wall. It’s about maximising space and getting the right equipment – lanterns, mosquito coils, comfy chairs, speakers, drink dispensers, and of course the right movie!

Get these elements right and you’ll find yourself – and your backyard – the most popular spot on your street.

Bird Bath

Ever wondered what to do with all those CDs you have lying around? Why not create a bird bath!

OK, so it’s not like you can create an actual birdbath from old or recycled CDs and DVDs but you can definitely make an old, cracked bird bath shine with this great DIY design idea.

All you have to do is grab fifty or so CDs that you no longer want and a pair of scissors. Then cut them into odd shaped pieces. You want the shiny rainbow side for artistic effect. Don’t worry if you get fingerprints on them. You’ll use a gloss to buff them up as a final step.

Once you have all the pieces cut up, think about how you’ll want to glue them onto the existing, decrepit bird bath of yours. Here, you can let your creative juices flow!
