5 Easy DIY Projects to Update your Wardrobe
We love living in the age of DIY: from housewares to kitchen cabinets to coming up with unique ways to update old favorites, do-it-yourself-ing has come a long way since the age of the bedazzler. When it comes to your wardrobe, however, it’s hard to pass up on the opportunity to update a great flea-market dress or make your own custom jewelry thanks to all of the tutorials available online. Here are just a few of our favorite ways to update your wardrobe using our fave DIY techniques.
Shoes that Shine
Whether you’re going to a wedding, a formal, or just want to make a huge statement with your shoes, there are tons of ways to DIY your boring black heels. With some gemstones and a hot glue gun or some superglue, you can create a masterpiece without dishing out a ton of cash.
Jewels that dazzle
If you’ve never made jewelry before, never fear, because DIY jewelry is all the rage these days. From using every-day materials such as a broken necklace to creating some pearl earrings with diamonds that shine, making your own jewelry is a great way to add some pizzaz to your otherwise classic store-bought wardrobe. Who knows? Maybe you’ll create something so beautiful that it will become a family heirloom.
Clothing transformations
Have you ever found a $2 shirt at a flea market or vintage clothing store that just didn’t fit? It’s so easy to tailor your own clothing to come up with a new, fashionable piece. An oversize button down can become a chic, fitted blouse in just a few steps, and skirts and pants can be hemmed to perfection.
Switch out the hardware
If you have an outdated sweater or button down that you just don’t love the look of, try finding unique and chic buttons at a local craft store to see if that will change the way you feel about your current wardrobe. This can go for jewelry too – changing the look of an earring back or bracelet clasp can make all the difference. Sometimes, switching out the hardware is all you need to do to update your stuff.
Organize
We would be totally remiss if we didn’t encourage you to organize and cleanse your wardrobe before you get started on your path to DIY. Having a closet that’s easy to navigate will make it possible for you to find the items you own that you already love, and see the potential in the clothing you own but could certainly love more. There’s room for DIY here too – use shower curtain hooks to organize your scarf collection, and Tupperware containers to make your shoes easy to see. One thing is certainly true – having a clean closet will bring you one step closer to having a closet you love.
These are just a few of the ways we love to DIY. Why splurge on expensive clothing and jewelry when you can create a custom wardrobe by taking a few extra steps?
