Arts and Crafts in USA
America knows arts and crafts, then why we shouldn’t when our heritage is a reflection of cultures from around the world. There is such a diversity of talent and tradition, that you really can’t go anywhere in this country and not see the influence of our ancestors. While there is no way possible to explain the all of the events that do occur through the seasons, here at least, is a sample from some of the more commonly known states in USA.
Maine (Bangor) – The Annual Bangor Arts and Crafts Show at the Bangor Civic Centre is a very large, indoor crafting event that takes place around the first weekend in November. The show features literally hundreds of crafters. Everything from wood crafting, beading, and ceramics is featured here.
Indiana (Montgomery) – The Midwest has its share of widely scattered and varied crafts events as well. The Gasth of Community of Amish in Montgomery holds a Christmas Crafts Bazaar on the first Friday and Saturday of November. The event comes complete with an Amish bakery where those of us who are so accustomed to pulling our food from a supermarket shelf, can enjoy the efforts of home baked goods direct from the farm.
Tennessee (Pigeon Forge, Smoky Mountains) – Northern Tennessee is a heaven for all types of craft related events. Most of them are hosted by the town’s own theme park, Dollywood. The Harvest Festival is an event that happens within the actual park, so it is outdoors for the most part. It showcases a mass of shows and crafts related goings on all through the autumn season. There are Quilters, a glass blower a blacksmith, and a dulcimer maker all on hand, either separately or sometimes together at other times of the year.
Arizona (Phoenix) – Also, be sure to see at least one Native arts event while you’re visiting the US. The Native American Arts Festival in Litchfield Park is hosted by the West Valley Native American Council and hosts many wonderful vendors proficient in the arts of beadwork, pottery, basket weaving, leather making, and painting. Visitors to the festival can also enjoy the flowing poetry of native dancers in elegant and colourful dress. The event runs on the first weekend in January.
These are only a small percentage of the many arts and crafts sights that are available for visiting in the USA. If you’re ever in the area, please don’t hesitate to stop in and enjoy.
