How to Build a Storage Ottoman
Ottomans have been around for quite a long time, being part of many cultures around the world. They have served as extra seating in the East, as well as the West, but today they serve more or less the same role with more added on top. There are versions with storage under the lid nowadays, which is an excellent design that combines aesthetics and utility in one solid package. It is the perfect place to setup blankets, books or something else you need hidden.
If you’re considering buying one, then you will need to look for lids capable of lifting off without safety hinges. If you prefer to have more control over what you have around your home, then you will need to create one of your own. You will need a few things to make it fit your personal needs, whether it’s making it stain resistant or capable of handling children and pets. You will need the following supplies:
Stuff Required:
One ¾ inch plywood top with dimensions 27 ½ x 38 ¼ inches
One ¾ inch plywood bottom with dimensions 26 x 36 ¾ inches
Two ¾ inch side pieces at 11 ½ x 27 ½ inches
Two front and back pieces at 11 ½ x 36 ¾ inches
Two 1×1 pine cleats at 26 inches
Two 1×1 pine cleats at 35 ¼ inches
Four 1×1 pine corner blocks at 10 inches
Roughly 10 square feet of batting
One piece of fabric at 3 ¾ yards
One piece of fabric at 6 ¼ yards
One 2-inch foam rubber cushion at 27 ½ x 38 ¼ inches
Procedure:
- Start your work by cutting the plywood for a base, top and bottom. Glue and clamp all four sides together so you can make the base box, then work on drilling the pilot holes and secure them with screws. Cut the pine cleats and install them all around the base interior, about ¾ inches above the edge on the bottom. Attach the reinforcement pine blocks on each of the corners inside, then glue, drill and screw the bottom pieces on.
- Trim the foam to cover the lid, and then use a spray adhesive to stick it all around the perimeter of the plywood. Once that is complete you will need to spray the foam edges with adhesive so you can fold them to meet the plywood. Wrap the top in the fabric and staple it on its underside. Once that is done you will need to line the entire perimeter with piping, stapling it in place when you’re finished.
- When you’re done you will need to join the upholstered top with the base with a hinge and toy box lid support. A set of four 5-inch bun feet will get the job done in terms of support.
When all is said and done this ottoman or ottomans will be excellent for storage purposes around your home, not to mention they will be easy to store in storage units or other storage options. For more moving and storage tips: Removals and Storage London Ltd.
