Creative Pumpkin Carving Step-by-Step Tips

Although the typical triangle-eyed pumpkin is an all-time traditional favorite, it can be interchanged with something more interesting and with a funny twist. The toothy grin is a pure classic, both for its creepiness in the right situation and because it can work wonders when combined with the proper eyebrows. There are many templates you can work with in terms of mixing and matching certain features, so it’s entirely up to you what kind of designs you want to incorporate into your Halloween preparations. Chances are however, you have never put a bow tie and top hat on your pumpkin and you have never made a pirate pumpkin. There is a lot of creative freedom to be had when working on these fun projects, but we will cover some of the basics of what needs to be done on a step by step basis.

To begin the work you will need to download and print out the template of your choice, and then work on different combinations you think will be a good idea. Taping the design is a necessary step toward making the pumpkin work, so keep your eyes open and look for where you’ll need to cut according to your chosen design. Before you begin however you will need a few things to complete the task:

Items Needed:

  • A pumpkin (of course)
  • A keyhole saw
  • Fleshing tool or a plastic scraper
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Masking tape
  • A miniature saw
  • Linoleum cutter
  • A needle tool, sharp awl or a T-pin

Once you have then, you can move on to the actual work ahead of you:

Start by hollowing out the pumpkin by using a keyhole saw. If you will use a candle for illumination purposes, you will need to cut a hole in the top area of the pumpkin. Always remember to use a candle placed in a glass with high sides and to avoid leaving it unattended for too long, as this may be a fire hazard with kids around. If you plan on using an electric light instead, make sure you have a hole in the bottom where you can hide the power cord. Remove all pulp, flesh and seeds with a fleshing or scraping tool.

Print out the template of your choice on an 8 ½ by 11 inch white paper. Cut the template out and tape it to the pumpkin.

Trace it onto the pumpkin and poke holes with an awl, T-pin or needle.

Remove the templates and carve by following the pattern. Use the small saw to cut in and use the linoleum cutter to carve the details you need on the surface of the pumpkin. Once you’re done you will need to apply petroleum jelly to the exposed skin of the pumpkin to prevent discoloration.
