Creative Storage Options For The Home And Garden
Storage wars: inventive ways to banish clutter
It’s a common first world problem: too much stuff, not enough storage space to put it away. If you find you’re always tripping over clutter, you may have forgotten the old adage ‘a place for everything, and everything in its place.’ Unfortunately, many homes just don’t come with enough integrated storage, so if you don’t have a specific place for your belongings, it’s time to make one.
In the bedroom
Having a clutter-free bedroom can actually help you get a more restful night’s sleep, so it’s time to blitz the boudoir. It’s likely your bed occupies a huge portion of your storage space, so buy some plastic, under bed storage containers and use to neatly stow shoes, clothes, paperwork and books. Instead of using valuable table space up with your bedside lamp, get an electrician to wire up sconces at either side of the bed, or suspend a Moroccan lantern from the ceiling above.
In the kitchen
Struggling to home stray utensils, and awkward items like the colander, pan lids and sieve? Make the most of your wall space with a pegboard, and hang up what you can’t stow away. Knife blocks take up valuable work space, so instead attach blades to a magnetic knife strip so they’re always at hand. If you don’t have enough cupboard space in your kitchen units, pan hooks and shelves are a viable DIY option, and you can even contemplate some extra space for cookery books if you add a few shelves below ceiling height.
In the bathroom
However large your bathroom, if it’s shared by more than one person, it’s likely too small! If you’re always battling piles of wrinkled, damp towels, hang up some coat hooks to keep them clean, dry, and out of the way, or roll your towels for shelving. Using a plate rack for soaps and toiletries is a practical alternative to wooden or metal racks, and much easier to keep clean with a quick wipe.
In the garden
The garden shed needn’t be a spider mansion; you can get some serious storage miles from it if you give it a clean out and reorganize the space. Add a bike-rack to the wall to instantly clear some floor space, and hang tools from wall hooks to eliminate trip hazards!Use plastic storage bins to keep all of your tools and equipment organised and to hand.
Reorganizing your home is also a great way to re appropriate used objects and recycle glass jars, plastic containers, clothes pegs and other bits and pieces. There’s always a way to make better use of a space, so long as you have a creative attitude!
