DIY Like a Pro: Design a Beautiful Baby Room in 7 Steps
The arrival of a baby will not only turn your whole life upside down, but your entire house as well. The first step of that large process would be to make some room for your baby in the house. With all the costs that come with having a baby, this might seem as the straw that broke the camel, but it does not have to be. Designing a beautiful nursery can be pulled off on a limited budget, if you plan everything carefully, get your hands a bit dirty and add the most important ingredient of all – love, and we will help you with the rest of them.
Make Plans
We know, this seems a bit redundant, but if you plan everything on time (the size of the crib, the colors of the walls, etc.) it will be much easier to build upon those sturdy foundations.
Now, you do not have to be alone in this, there are several useful online tools that helps moms and dads-to-be create a nursery room project, e.g. Room to Bloom, Room Planner, the Carousel Design, The Huggies Baby Room Decorator, etc. These resources will help you navigate through the decorating process and see the results before you act.
Pick a Color (Not Just) Any Color
Choosing a color is not that easy as “pink for the girls and blue for the boys” idea. Go beyond that stereotypical way of thinking and decide for an overall theme. It does not have to be anything complicated, it can be just fresh and summery (mint, pastels, etc.), beach (desert sand and turquoise), rustic (warm browns), fun and playful (blackboard paint). Painting is just as easy as coloring book, just do not cross the lines.
Invest in a Multi-Functional Crib
Crib is, of course, the most important item in the room, and since it should meet certain safety standards, it is well worth the investment. As you are already spending some money, add a bit more to make the investment last.
Buy a multi-functional crib that can later convert in a toddler bed, or even a full blown kids’ bed. Choose a neutral style, since you do not know what your little one will love when the time comes to have an actual kids’ room.
DIY Changing Table
You cannot have a baby without having dirty diapers, and since that will happen really often, you ought to have a place to change the baby without developing back pain. You do not have to spend tons of money to buy a changing table, when you can make one by yourself. You can use an old bookcase with a removable topper, and create an open storage underneath with baskets and bins.
Never Enough Storage
Babies can pile up quite a decent amount of stuff – from clothes they keep on outgrowing to numerous toys they get as gifts. It is very important to have enough storage solutions and keep the room well organized. Storage can be everywhere – from underneath the crib drawers to open shelves on the wall. Use various creative solutions to save money and make the room more personal – wooden crates, decorative baskets, book shelves, plastic boxes, etc.
Add Warmth and Texture
A nursery room must look gentle, loving and soft, and the best way to do it is by introducing some warmth and texture. Do that by choosing some lovely wallpapers, flowy sheer curtain and colorful and soft bedding. With many available styles of fun and playful kids’ floor rugs, it should not be difficult to make the floors fun and stimulating as well.
A Mommy and Daddy Nook
Last, but not least, you should make some room for yourself, from where you will be able to watch your angel sleep, read fairy tales and sing lullabies. We suggest exploring your local flea market for an antique rocking chair or a comfy armchair. You can repair and refurnish them easily with some online guide. An ottoman to rest your weary feet would be a nice addition. Place a small bookcase and a table lamp besides your chair, and add a cozy throw blanket if you decide to take a nap.
Remember that the rule number one of nursery and kids’ rooms is for them to be safe. So make sure you childproof the space before your little bundle of joy starts crawling and reaching for stuff.
