Fundamentals of Making Handmade Rug
Handmade rugs are attractive and making handmade rug, in different designs, patterns and colours that you want, is really a fun. There are different rugs that you can make depending on your level of skill or knowledge, i would say that fundamentals of making handmade rug are as simple as one, two, three. There are braided rugs, woven rugs and sewn rugs. The most common fabrics used to make rugs are wool and cotton as they last long, are high quality and they look good. When buying the wool or cotton you will use, ensure that you get the heavy duty kind so that your rug can last long. Pick the complementary or contrasting colours that best go with the decor of the room your rug will be placed in. Measure the length and width of the area where you will place the rug as they will guide you on the size of the rug.
If you are creating a braided rug ensure that the strips you cut from the fabric are of the same length and width. This is so that your rug will be uniform without having areas that are thicker which can make it look unsightly. You can hem the edges of your strips as these will make it easier to braid them or you can use a braider which is a metal cone through which you pass the strip edges and they come out folded. The strips should ideally measure between 2 and 4 inches in width as these measurement is easy to work with.
Take three strips of the fabric, knot them then braid them tightly enough so that it will not come undone. When you are about to finish one braid, you can attach more fabric at the end of the braid edges by sewing then continue braiding. Alternatively you can braid different pieces of fabric together so that you have a number of braids. Attach them together by sewing after you have a number of braids and begin to form the rug. This method however may result in having either less pieces or mismatched braids so your rug looks slightly askew. To prevent this from happening, make the braids as uniform as possible.
The shape of the rug will determine the length of the centre braid as this braid will guide you on how the rest of the rug will shape up. For a round or oval rug, subtract the length of the rug from the width so if it is 8×6 rug, subtract these figures and you will get 2 which will be the length of the centre braid. For a rectangular rug, the centre braid will be two times the length of the rug while a square rug the centre braid will be the same measurement as the length and width.
While shaping the rug so that you can sew the braids together, you can use pins to hold it in place as you sew the braids together so it is much easier for you. Sew the braids using carpet thread as it will be sturdy enough to hold the pieces together and shall last longer. After some of the tries your expertise will rise in making handmade rug.
