Green Fashion: How to Care for Organic Clothes

If there is one trend in fashion that everybody should agree on, then it is the trend of having organic fabrics and organic materials used when creating and wearing clothes. This eco-friendly trend is good for the environment, good for the general environmental consciousness and it is a very cool idea. So, once you are all into organically made clothing, the only question that remains unanswered is how to take care of the organic clothing. Here are some guidelines and tips on how to do it properly and well.

Washing

Let’s assume that the organic fabric that you have chosen for the clothes is the pure and organic cotton. This fabric is not cheap and it should not be cheap if you want quality and you don’t want to rob somebody who has put effort in growing and processing the cotton in the organic way. However, pure cotton demands care and it is best if you chose to wash it by hand and in carefully chosen temperatures. Real cotton shrinks on high temperatures and it loses its shape, therefore, make sure that you wash it by hand whenever you can. It is best to wash it day by day and keep it fresh than to put it in a washing machine after a while.

Detergents

The whole idea about the organic clothes will be completely pointless if you use all those commercial detergents that will pollute the environment and fresh water. Also, a lot of them contain all sorts of allergens. In order to avoid that, you should try and find some organically made detergents in your local community and try using them. They come in all sorts of variants and most of them also make the water softer which is great for the clothes made from the organic materials. Not to mention all the amazing ingredients that have wonderful natural smells that last on your clothes.

Softeners

The softeners used on your organic clothes are not necessary if you wash the clothes by hand and use the organic detergents. However, if you insist on using them, you definitely want to find out about the organic variants of it in your local stores. On the other hand, it is quite possible to find online recipes that will teach you how to make your own softeners that are organic and pretty much effective and they don’t hurt the environment like the commercial ones do.

Drying

Pure cotton is not that easy to dry. At all costs, avoid drying them in the machine and try to dry them on the line. However, the cut and the shape of your clothes may be lost if you hang the cotton clothes on the line. Your best bet with organic clothing is to make it drip dry by laying it on the grid of some kind and let it dry off. High heat will shrink the cotton so bare that in mind, as well.

Stains

The first thing you should do with organic clothing when it’s got stains on it is to treat the stain itself first before tossing it into the washing machine. The rule of thumb is not to use hot water because it will fortify the stain. Use cold water and a little bit of diluted detergent and apply it directly on the stain. Only when you have treated it that way, you should put it into the washing machine or wash the entire piece by hand. Also, you can let it soak for a couple of hours, or overnight before washing as that will help the stain go away.

To sum up, all the organic clothing needs to be taken care of in an organic way. Natural detergents and natural products are the proper way to deal with the stains while drip drying is the way to go when you need the clothes washed and dried. It is important to know that you will need to put a little bit of extra care in your organic clothing, but it worth your while knowing that you are doing something good for the environment and for yourself by using these kinds of fabrics and these kinds of garments.
