Interior Design Tricks for Small Spaces
Hiring a professional interior designer to organize and manage your apartment would be the most convenient decision, of course. However, their services are not cheap and you really have to have a substantial monthly income in order to have enough assets to ask them for assistance. So, for most of the people living ordinary everyday lives this is not a feasible option. It means that they need to rely on their own wits and skills and make their living space unique and decorated in a tasty but functional way. It does not seem difficult, does it? However, there are many dead ends in this process, especially if your place is small. You need to be able to use as much space as possible to place all the items in a neat way. It is a real challenge and here are some tricks on how to master this art-like skill.
Lighter shades, more space
The way we perceive colors determines the way we perceive space, too. When colors and their shades are dark, the space they surround or fill seems narrower, too. If you want to organize your small place in a fine way, do not go for dark shades. Only bright shades are going to visually expand it and give an impression of larger space.
Also, if the space you want to deal with is darker by its nature, think about adding another window. If it is possible and the place is yours, providing more natural light for it will mean a lot to you and your cohabitants (if any).
Multifunctional items
Small apartments and houses demand loads of imagination. One idea that could help you make everything spick and span is making items in it multifunctional. For instance, you could take some middle-sized boxes and fill them with books. After that, you could put tablecloths on them and get a sort of small coffee tables. In addition to that, if there are stairs in your apartment or house, the space beneath the stairs can be used for the storage purpose, too.
Also, a regular kitchen table can also serve as a desk, a coffee table and many other purposes if the space does not allow for separate desks and tables. However, in such a case, the cooking area of the kitchen needs to have some sort of a centerpiece, so that you can move things from the table on it.
Concealing/revealing curtains and rugs
In such tiny places, rugs and curtains can help a lot when it comes to the process of deceiving the eye of the observer. Rugs are perfect for such small spaces. Carpets would only suffocate the already shrunk space. No matter if you put round- or square-shaped rugs, classic ones or shaggy rugs on the floor, the space will still breathe.
Curtains, on the other side, play the role of revealers and hiders. They can be placed instead of a door and hide a shelf with books or a built-in closet. Also, the color of curtains determines the overall impression of the room, so think carefully what effect you want to accomplish.
