Mirrors – the changing Role in Modern World
It is rightly said that mirrors are the reflection of the soul. Anyone who looks into the mirror can see what his soul tells him. However, mirrors are playing a huge role in redesigning our home and office spaces in the recent times. Gone are the days, when these used to be only functional pieces of furniture. Modern marvels have led us to believe that these are and can effectively be used to play around with space and reflection of light. Mirrors create an illusion of space and ventilation and can effectively make a cramped room look bigger. Architectural excellence have made all this and much more possible.
The Role of Mirrors in Home Decor:
1- Mirrors are not what they used to be some years back. These were more conventional looking as people were concerned only with their functionality. However changing trends and the incorporation of mirrors into the home décor has evolved the age old mirror. Mirrors come in varying sizes and shapes, different textures and different colors. These mirrors are perfect for using in the home decor and these reflect light and make the house look alive and bursting with energy. These are perfect for urban life too as these make small cramped up spaces look more spacious. Mirrors are thus an architectural wonder in the contemporary times.
2- Mirrors are commonly placed near the entry or exit of houses. Firstly, this is believed to channelize energy and secondly as mirrors reflect light, hence the entry and exit points become as focal and inviting to the guests. They make the area so attractive and alluring that the entry flows to the adjacent rooms are done as seamlessly as possible.
3- Mirrors are clandestine pieces that go well when used ornamentally in the home decor. These are used as a finished material on the walls and as a cladding piece on furniture. These can be hung over fireplaces and placed or molded in frames. These can instantly transform a room into looking spacious. Mirrors are extremely versatile and these are a mode of channeling energy when used in alternate practices such as Feng Shui. For instance, a mirror placed over a fireplace will effectively enlarge the room. This acts as a mantel showpiece for the room and also gives it a reflective surface to play it. Seasonal decor, candlesticks and a lovely mirror over the fireplace – what more can one want from a room?
4- Some of the modern bedrooms come equipped with a lot of mirrors. The prime reason for the same being that being placed at corners can enhance the look of the bedroom and at the same time create an optical illusion of space in the home. Some people prefer to fix mirrors on the ceilings too. The bottom-line is that the mirrors and their placement in any room in your house depend on how you want to give vent to your self-expressions. Mirrors placed in a bedroom, should not reflect the bed. According to feng Shui, it interferes with the personal energy and invites a third party into the intimate relationship.
5- Mirrors are not necessary in a kitchen as it can pose problem like watermarks and would need a constant maintenance.
6- Mirrors placed next to the dining table are believed to bring fortune and wealth to the home. At the same time the mirrors placed at the end of the hallway stops the energy flow from coming into the home and hence these are not the right places to keep as per the Feng Shui.
Bathroom mirrors help optimize flow of positive energy and hence can be placed effectively.
