How to Organize Your Dorm Room Closet Space
A dorm room is small, but the closet is even smaller! College students have a lot of “stuff” and they need adequate space to store all of it. We have put together some tips to help you stay organized and make the most of that small space.
Clear the Clutter
Don’t keep what you don’t need. Once you have been in your dorm room for a while, evaluate what you haven’t used and can clear out of your room. Rotate your clothing out for the seasons. You do not need to keep clothing for all seasons in your small dorm room all year.
Get Started
Schedule time to organize your dorm room so that you will not run into any time conflicts with class or any other events. Some organization experts advise to start fresh and empty your closet space while some experts say not to empty out your closet, but to move section by section and organize as you go. It is best to choose the method that works for you.
Choose the Right Hangers
There are many different kinds of hangers, and using the right ones can help save on space by combining pants and shirts on the same hangers and even special space saving hangers that cascade down to allow for additional garments to be hung in the same space.
Use all Available Space
From the ceilings to the floors and even the door, fill in storage everywhere. If your dorm room has room at the top, add compartments for folded clothes or spare dorm bedding, use hanging storage on the door, even on the front and back if necessary. Evaluate if your clothes will better fit in compartments instead of being hung.
Think Out of the Box
We mean literally. If everything cannot fit in the dorm room, then add organized storage space outside of the closet. This can be achieved in many ways with traditional storage boxes, dual space saving tricks like inside ottomans, seats, or under the bed, additional shelving units on an empty wall, or creative and fun storage pieces like PVC pipes.
Imagine a Different Design
Often it is very hard to think of a different way to organize your closet when looking at it. Try a blank slate by sketching out your closet space and envisioning different designs. If you are making a new organizational set up for your closet be sure to take accurate measurements so that your new look comes out just perfect.
