Simple Steps To Create Your Child’s Dream Bedroom
One of the special things about being a parent is being able to nice things for your kids. Children are almost always grateful (the older ones don’t always like to show it, but trust us, they are) for any kind of gift, whether it’s a wrapped present in a box or something larger like a room renovation.
You don’t even need to have a lot of home décor experience to create something with a look and feel they’ll enjoy.
Getting started with their one-of-a-kind bedroom really just requires sitting down and figuring out what style or theme you’re going for, then a plan for the bed, other furnishings, and what colors you’ll need.
Your theme could be something they’re really into, such as cars, animals/jungle, princesses/castles, space, dinosaurs, pretty much anything from popular culture. If they’re real little, they may not have even picked something specific, so it’s even easier to find something general that can stick around for years.
- First, find paint. These days, paint companies can match any shade you like or need, and have the exact color combinations down to a science. Some companies provide walls of swatches at your favorite hardware or paint store, and others even offer online examples, or can mail you samples so you can look at it in the space you’ve chosen. - Now that you’ve found the ideal color for the walls, look for ways to match the furniture. This includes looking at what pieces are already in the room (bed, nightstand, desk, toy chest), and whether the color you’re planning on will accent these nicely or clash. You also need to consider how the room will look during different points of the day – does sunlight fill the whole room or do some areas always stay in the shadows? Colors also have some effects – bolder colors are great for larger spaces and minimal furniture, but more subtle colors are preferred for smaller spaces. - Beds aren’t just for sleeping – they can be a child’s refuge. Even if you have more than one child to a room, each individual bed usually is declared home base/don’t touch. Some models of beds include storage areas or play areas underneath. Your future NASCAR driver will love sleeping in a bed shaped like a race car, while your little princess will love a castle-like poster bed. School-age children may benefit from something that includes a bed on the top and a desk underneath. Kids with the elevated beds sometimes do get an innovative treat for literally climbing into bed each evening – a slide that takes them down. There are so many beds to choose from, for example a Parisot Tam Tam or a Thuka midsleeper; to see many of the possibilities available to please any child, click here.
Whether you’re doing the bedroom revamp with your child’s input or as a complete surprise for him or her, there are many ways to have a lot of fun and help create a memorable living space.
