Getting started with Arts and Crafts
One of the biggest roadblocks people have, when taking up new arts and crafts hobby, is the cost. So many people want to start scrapbooking, sewing, or jewellery making, but don’t want to invest in the materials to get going. What if they end up not liking the craft? What if they don’t have the skill? Thankfully, part of the DIY mentality includes creativity and improvising. Here are some cost effective ways to get the materials you need.
Let’s say you want to take up jewellery making, but don’t want to head over to the craft store and drop a bunch of change to get beads and findings. Instead, go to rummage sales. People are always selling old jewellery that they are sick of wearing. You can take advantage of this by buying the already made jewellery and disassembling it. That way you can revamp it into an updated piece you actually want to wear. The dollar store also often has cheap costume jewellery that can be utilized. For just a few bucks, you could have a lovely new set of accessories.
Maybe you’re more interested in sewing. While it is an investment to get a sewing machine if you don’t already have one, thread is inexpensive and fabric is easy to come by. Starter sewers can benefit from reshaping their existing clothes into something new. For example, an over-sized shirt can be made into a fitted tunic or even a mini dress. Jean pockets can be transformed into small purses. Get creative with the clothes you were just going to get rid of anyways. If you are questioning your sewing skills, practice on clothes that are stained or ripped.
Scrapbooking is often considered one of the more expensive crafts to start up. There are so many directions you can take and so many tools to explore. While you may not be able to get many materials at once, you can take advantage of other people’s over indulgence. Check trading and selling websites for people who are trying to make a little of their money back after they realized this was not the hobby for them. You may be able to find a big box of material for a quarter of the price. While it will not be the exact styles you would have picked out on your own, it will save you a lot of time and money as you are experimenting with the idea.
Taking up new arts or crafts do not have to be an expensive investment if you are creative. Sewing machines and materials can make perfect gifts for girls. With a little imagination, you could possibly save yourself hundreds of dollars as you explore your options and find a new passion.
