5 Easy DIY Projects that Cost Less Than a Cup of Tea
Sometimes you just want to create something with your own hands. However, big projects and the tools for these projects can be expensive. Luckily, even if you can’t afford a Fein Multimaster you can still put together some cool DIY projects for less than your morning coffee run.
1. Motion-Activated Alarm
Using a cheap tilt switch, vibration alarm and some soldering skills you can easily make a motion-activated warning device for anything that you might want to protect at a total cost of about $2. Finding parts for this nearly-instant alarm for your bike, laptop, phone, or anything else is easy at your local electronics store. Of course, if you don’t own the tools for soldering you’ll need to beg, borrow or buy them which can be an additional cost.
2. Noise-Isolating Earbuds
These DIY earbuds isolate you from noise but the more important feature might be that they are actually comfortable. Buy some foam earplugs and scrounge up a pair of plug-on-a-post earbuds. Remove the plug on the post, replace with custom-fitted foam earplugs and rock on for about a dollar. Scissors are the only tool you really need although some other equipment will make the job easier. Remember, earplugs are disposable but cheap so make mass replacements and simply put in new ones when the old ones get dirty.
3. Smartphone or Tablet Stand
There are lots of ways to make a stand for a smartphone or tablet. If you have the skills and want something that looks nicer than cardboard, go to the local lumber yard’s scrap pile and get some free or very cheap wood. It takes nothing more than a few screws and a basic knowledge of physics to create a laptop, tablet or smartphone stand. The total cost can be just the price of the screws if you already have or can borrow the tools.
4. DIY Charging Station
Organize your cords and keep your electronics all in one place with a DIY charging station. There are lots of ways to make one and many of them can be done for less than the price of a cup of coffee. An attractive plastic bowl and a piece of foam cut to fit is one possible option.
5. Wireless Signal Booster
If your wireless signal seems to be best everywhere but where you need it, consider making a wireless signal booster. There are several methods including the option of opening the router to make adjustments with copper wire. However, aluminum foil antennae work for this purpose as well.
