Tricks to Create Baby Play Area at Home
It’s an exciting experience when a family gets a new addition and is able to bring their new family member home from the hospital. Babies are lots of fun to watch grow and bring parents lots of joy. It is also important to note that babies need a lot of help as they grow. Crawling, standing, and walking are all exciting parts of a baby’s development and they need a safe space to explore in. This is why it is helpful to create a baby play area at home. Below are five helpful tricks to remember when it is time to put a playroom room together.
Create Barriers
Playpens and baby gates are great protectors when parents can’t constantly be two steps behind baby. A playpen is nice because parents are able to throw in a few stuffed toys, and the baby is usually happy exploring within the confined space. When ready to take them out, make sure there are baby gates in place or strong barriers around the play area so they can’t escape. This is especially important if the play area is near stairs or anywhere where they can potentially fall and get injured.
Use Lots of Cushions
Babies begin their independence journey by crawling first and then walking. Adults take the ability to walk for granted, but it can be tricky business for someone who is just learning how to stand and balance on their own. Be sure to have lots of cushions on the floor to soften the blow when they fall. In addition to carpeted mats, place padding underneath the mat to add more cushion, and to prevent the top mat from sliding on hard flooring. Have your baby practice standing and walking in this area rather than on concrete or kitchen tiles.
Purchase Durable and Easy-to-Clean Materials
It is no secret babies are capable of creating really messy situations. Even when they’re not trying to, kids make big messes. Your baby might be clean, bathed and dressed one moment, and in the next, throws up all over their clothes and mommy or daddy. When your little one is moving around a lot and having fun in the play area, it is not uncommon to find a little (or a lot) of drool on their clothes, the toys, the mats, and the floor. Make sure the materials for the toys and cushions are either easy to throw in the washing machine with detergent. Alternatively, if their material can’t go into the washing machine, make sure it can be easily wiped down with soap and water. If neither is possible, it’s probably wise to find materials that are easier to clean. Stains, messiness, and germs are all a part of being a baby, but you can prevent some messes with these ideas.
Keep it Within View
An adult must always be able to see what baby is doing, and they should never play in their play area unsupervised. Yes, it is already protected by various barriers and gates, but unexpected things do happen. Babies are naturally curious and like putting objects in their mouths. It is important to keep an eye out for what they’re doing to make sure they don’t accidentally swallow something hazardous.
Incorporate Color
Whether it comes through wall posters, building cubes, or the accent wall in the baby’s play area, always incorporate color into a play area. It is nice for the baby area to be visually stimulating. While it is a place to have fun, the play area is also a great place for the baby to become familiar with the variations of color, shapes, sights, and sounds. Take advantage of deals where you can find baby toys on sale to include various learning and visually stimulating elements into the room.
Taking all these tips into consideration, the goal is to create an environment that’s happy and healthy for your new baby. It may be tempting to stress over every little detail, but as long as these few suggestions are followed, everything will be fine.
